In the city of La Grita, Táchira state, they celebrate every August 6 the pilgrimage of Santa Cristo de la Grita, named a National Heritage Site on September 5, 2010 by the Supreme Commander of the Revolution, Hugo Chávez.
Its origin dates back to 1610, when the city of La Grita suffered a tragedy due to an earthquake, the Franciscan friars who lived in that town had to move to a field called Tadea, including a sculptor named Fray Francisco, who was terrified of the earthquake, offered to heaven, according to tradition, to make an image of the crucifix, to worship him in a special way and to dedicate a new city to them.
In La Grita they celebrate with prayers and pilgrimages for the Saint in the Basilica, which consists of a monumental square where cultural and social events take place, it has a beautiful dome, the revolutionary leader was responsible for making a statue in honor of the saint, he is considered one of the tallest and most unique figures in the world. The city is considered the sanctuary of Venezuela.
