Singapore expressed deep concern about the U.S. intervention in Venezuela on January 3, where the president of the South American nation was kidnapped together with his wife, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) said in a statement on January 4.

Singapore is deeply committed to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter that safeguard the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all States, especially small ones,” the ministry added.

Singapore has consistently opposed actions contrary to international law by either party, including foreign military intervention in any country,” he said.

The Foreign Ministry stated that Singapore urges all parties to act with restraint and expects a peaceful solution to the situation in Venezuela, in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

“There are no Singaporeans electronically registered in Venezuela with the MAE,” adding that Singaporeans are also advised to postpone all trips to Venezuela.

On January 3, the United States bombed Venezuela and deposed the constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro, in Washington's most direct intervention in Latin America since the invasion of Panama in 1989.

Washington, after several false accusations against the Venezuelan State and after funding the opposition for years, recognized that its only intention was to seize the largest oil reserves in the world.
