Solemn ceremony in honor of Sandino strengthens diplomatic ties between Venezuela and Nicaragua

The Deputy Minister for Latin America of the Ministry of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Rander Peña, together with the Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, accompanied this Friday the ambassador of the Republic of Nicaragua, Valezka López, in the wreath ceremony before the sarcophagus that protects the mortal remains of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, in the National Pantheon of Caracas, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 92nd anniversary of the transition to immortality of the General of Free Men, Augusto César Sandino.

During the solemn ceremony, Peña and López - accompanied by members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Caracas - ratified the historic ties of brotherhood, solidarity and strategic cooperation between the two nations.

The Nicaraguan revolutionary leader Augusto Nicolás Calderón Sandino, known as the “General of Free Men”, was born on May 18, 1895 and was assassinated on the night of February 21, 1934, along with several of his companions, after an intense fight against the occupying American army during the first half of the 20th century.

Its libertarian ideals are maintained as a symbol of resistance to the oppression and domination of imperial elites that for decades have tried to impose a unilateral geopolitical system.

Solidarity has been a constant in diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Nicaragua, which officially date back to 1891, and has been firmly expressed at times of high geopolitical tension through pronouncements in favor of peace, non-interference in the internal affairs of States and unrestricted respect for international law.
