Thousands of firefighters are still deployed working to combat the flames in two major wildfires in Southern California in the United States, while winds decrease in the area. Local authorities confirmed that the fires have left at least 27 dead and destroyed around 12,300 structures.
The Palisades fire, the largest and most active forest fire in the Los Angeles region, has burned 95.96 square kilometers and after its start on January 7, it has been contained by 31%.
“Last night and this morning, cooler temperatures, light winds and good humidity were observed,” the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said today in an update, adding that “crews continue to establish and improve containment lines to minimize the spread of flames around structures that are inside controlled areas, as well as to provide safety for the public and personnel involved in the incident,” international media cited.
Another major active fire, the Eaton Fire, had been 65 percent contained as of today morning, compared to 55 percent on Thursday. The deadly fire burned 57.1 square kilometers (14,117 acres) near Altadena and Pasadena.
