This Wednesday, the delegations of Mexico and the United States (USA) will inaugurate the first formal round of talks for the revision of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).
The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, will lead the meeting that marks the beginning of the process of evaluating the treaty with a view to its update scheduled for 2026, with the aim of strengthening the region's competitiveness vis-a-vis other global economic blocs.
The Mexican agenda for this initial session prioritizes maintaining the zero tariff and consolidating regional supply chains.
The government of Mexico seeks to ensure that trade flow between the two nations is not interrupted by technical barriers, focusing on strategic sectors such as automotive and technology to reduce dependence on inputs from markets outside North America.
During the day, Ebrard emphasized the importance of economic cohesion for the stability of the two countries. “Separating that integration causes a lot of problems for the United States and also for Mexico. So, staying together is very important for the region, our peoples and our nations; a cool head and firmness will guide us,” he said.
This meeting formally establishes the schedule of technical meetings that will take place during the rest of the year.
After this first contact in Washington, the work teams from both countries will proceed to analyze the specific chapters of the agreement to present their conclusions at the next high-level negotiating tables.
