This Sunday, a group of international volunteers who were part of the Sumud Maghreb Global Convoy are celebrating a fortnight of incommunicado detention after being arbitrarily arrested in eastern Libya.

Those affected, who were heading to the Gaza Strip for the purpose of providing humanitarian assistance, have reported that they are being held in a detention center without independent supervision, where they lack access to medical assistance and basic legal guarantees.

In the absence of progress towards their release and the conditions of detention in which they find themselves, the volunteers began a hunger strike, extended in several cases to a dry strike as a measure of protest. Reports indicate a progressive deterioration in the physical health of detainees, who have experienced fainting and other complications resulting from lack of food and poor hygiene conditions in the place of detention.

The situation has generated growing concern at the international level, as the Libyan authorities have restricted the access of humanitarian and legal aid agencies to the facilities.

The uncertainty about the legal status of the members of the convoy, together with complaints of psychological pressure inside the compound, has been reported by several organizations that demand the intervention of global bodies to ensure the physical integrity of the activists.

So far, the absence of a clear response from local authorities has hampered efforts to gain access to international observers. The group, made up of citizens of different nationalities, is waiting for communication channels to be established to determine their legal status and ensure the minimum humanitarian conditions required by current international conventions.
