Supreme Court of Brazil sentences Javier Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison

The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison this Thursday, in the trial of action for the coup attempt against current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on January 8, 2023.

With the votes of Carmen Lúcia and Cristiano Zanin, the First Chamber of the Supreme Court ruled by a majority to sentence the former president, with a result of 4 to 1. In addition to the right-wing leader, his collaborators and the soldiers who accompanied him in the coup attempt were condemned.

They are Alexandre Ramagem, former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN); Admiral Almir Garnier, former commander of the Navy; Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Security of the Federal District; General Augusto Heleno, former head of the Institutional Security Cabinet; Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, former assistant to orders to the Presidency and whistleblower of the plot; General Paulo Sérgio Nogueir a, former Minister of Defense; and General Walter Braga Netto, former minister of the Civil House. All were singled out as part of the joint effort to subvert the democratic order in Brazil.
