The Syrian president in transition, Ahmed al Sharaa, confirmed that he will continue to cooperate with the Russian Federation on the basis of mutual respect for the interests of both countries, as reported by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, during a meeting with the president, Vladimir Putin.
“A few days ago, Syrian President Al Sharaa was in Qatar, and we talked to him a lot. We discussed with him the historical ties between Russia and Syria, which were and are strategic in nature. He is determined to continue this cooperation, to build interaction on the basis of mutual respect and the interests of the two peoples,” he stressed, according to detailed information from TASS.
In this context, the emir added that the Arab country was asking for support for independence and territorial integrity. “Syria is undoubtedly going through a very difficult period and, of course, it is necessary to support the aspirations of the new Syrian authorities to guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of this country.”
On January 29, 2025, Al Sharaa declared himself interim president of Syria after Bashar al-Asad resigned from office in 2024. The transition period, which, as specified, would last between four and five years.
