Taiwan: Rescue efforts continue after magnitude 7.4 earthquake

This Thursday, rescue teams continue to rescue more than one hundred people who are still trapped after the earthquake that shook the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, leaving nine dead and more than a thousand injured.

According to data provided by the Emergency Response Center, the earthquake caused a total of 2,471 incidents of varying magnitude across the island, most of them in eastern Hualien County, ground zero of the catastrophe.

Telesur explained that for now, the authorities are working to search for 147 people trapped or incommunicado under the rubble.

Six people were rescued this Thursday by helicopter in the mining region of Hejen, while another 65 people remain trapped in mining areas of Hualien, and it has not yet been possible to determine if they were in or out of the mines at the time of the earthquake, the largest that Taiwan has experienced since 1999.
