In the last four years, the Presidential Commission for the Recovery of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) has refurbished 686 rooms, 234 laboratories, 615 offices, 495 bathrooms, 142 offices, 142 offices, said the person in charge of this commission, Francisco Garcés.
In statements replicated by the newspaper Úlmas Noticias, Garcés indicated that, during this time, 13 auditoriums and the same number of amphitheaters have also been recovered, in addition to nine gyms, 14 courts, six works of art and five operating rooms.
He stressed that the most important work that has been done in the place, built by the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, has been to have achieved “to value the quality of this work, its architectural, engineering and landscape dimensions”.
In this regard, Garcés referred to the international competition for the restoration of the UCV undulating corridor system, which was launched in 2024 in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and through which proposals for its rehabilitation are being evaluated.
He also referred to the landscaping of the house that overcomes the shadows and noted that advances have been made in the felling, pruning and reseeding of several species. “A great job was done at the time of Villanueva, but the trees hadn't grown. Today we have the greatest splendor,” he praised.
With regard to the balance sheet offered, he said that currently the greatest challenge facing the Presidential Commission is to agree on the steps to be taken with the university authorities, that is, the rector, his vice-rectors and the deans, in order to ensure that what has been done is maintained over time and that, in this way, every person who enters the University City knows that he is entering the World Heritage Site, thus declared by UNESCO in 2000, which was also built, maintained and recovered by Venezuelans.
In 2021, the Bolivarian Government created the commission to promote the rescue and restoration of the Villanueva project, after two sections of the roof of corridor 5 fell a year earlier. However, work is still being done to recover this corridor.
