The Donald Trump administration announced the cancellation of 83% of the programs of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), after a six-week review.
According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the 5,200 eliminated contracts represented an expense of billions of dollars that, in many cases, did not benefit the national interests of the United States.
Rubio also reported that 18% of the remaining programs, close to 1,000, will be managed by the State Department, in coordination with Congress.
USAID, for its part, reported the dismissal of 1,600 employees and the administrative suspension of most of the remaining staff. As of 23:59 (Eastern Time) on February 23, 2025, only those responsible for critical functions, essential leadership, or specific projects will remain active.
