The
United States Department of State (USA) canceled, this Thursday, the foreign aid program to support opposition
sectors and religious groups in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, because
after a review it concluded that they are not of “national interest” for the North American country, according to information from
the New Herald.
In addition, according to the Mayamero
newspaper, the canceled programs were managed by the International
Republican Institute (IRI), a supposed non-profit organization
linked to the ruling party.
However, of the 95 programs funded by the State Department and the U.S.
International Development Agency, only three remain active, albeit
paused, all related to groups in Venezuela.
These three programs remain under
review and on hold, following a State Department directive to
implement President Donald Trump's executive order to freeze all foreign aid
funds for 90 days.
These actions have generated severe concern in sectors of the right, since many programs that were financed under the false pretext of “defending democracy” have been left in limbo.
