The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) financed the Mexican opposition with 96.7 million pesos (5.1 million dollars), during the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as revealed this Wednesday by the Government of the Aztec nation.

The head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UFI), Pablo Gómez Álvarez, presented a report requested by the president to demonstrate the “interference” and “violation of sovereignty” of the United States in Mexican politics, which he has denounced in recent weeks.

He noted that USAID, a “very politically active body, is a civil association proclaimed non-profit,” and the funds it receives are tax deductible, although in reality it is not dedicated to the objectives for which it was supposedly constituted.

“At the very least they should have the obligation to inform the people of Mexico what they do with these quantities that are not small and, in another sense, Mexicans are obliged to ask Congress for permission to provide services to foreign governments. Is receiving donations equivalent to providing a certain kind of services or being under the supervision of foreign governments?” , he questioned.

The official explained that U.S. funding for Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), an organization created by opposition businessman Claudio X. González and chaired by sociologist María Amparo Casar, began in 2018, just after López Obrador won the presidential elections, and has continued throughout the six-year term.

Since then and until now, he added, USAID sent millions of dollars in resources, which were added to other funds provided to MCCI by private entities such as the Ford, John and Catherine MacArthur, Community and Rockefeller foundations, among others.

The detailed list of the accounts of MCCI, an organization that has carried out multiple journalistic investigations to denounce causes of corruption in the current Government, includes contributions from private companies in Mexico.

López Obrador had already anticipated that they would release this report and that he would send a letter to the US president, Joe Biden, to demand clarity on funding for opponents in the Latin American country.
