This Sunday the people of Portugal are carrying out a new electoral process to elect president for the period 2026-2031.

More than 11 million voters are called to the polls to elect a successor to the current president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, about to run out of his second consecutive term since 2016. The ballots include 11 names; if none of the suitors gets more than 50 percent of the votes, there will be a second round on February 8 .

Among the main candidates are Luís Marques Mendes, representing the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD); the former Secretary General of the Socialist Party António José Seguro and the far-right André Ventura, leader of Chega, details the international press.

Retired admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, who is running as an independent candidate, and liberal MEP João Cotrim de Figueiredo, who unexpectedly rose in the polls in the final phase of the campaign to vote intention polls, are also likely to advance to the second round.
