Trujillo's Gusneiver Gil (FAM-Birdman Level Up) won a monumental victory in the eighth stage of the 61st edition of the Vuelta al Táchira on the mythical ascent to Cerro El Cristo, in Capacho.
Gil lectured on how to manage forces in the high mountains, while Jorge Abreu (Fina Arroz-CES Multimarcas) took a giant step closer to the championship of the Vuelta Grande de América.
The most anticipated day of the Andean calendar included a demanding 154.5 kilometer route starting from Abejales, in the southern area of Táchira.
From the first pedals, the peloton faced variable weather conditions and accompanied, over long stretches of the course, with persistent rain that added an extra degree of difficulty to the teams' strategy.
The resolution of the day was reserved for the last kilometers, specifically the climb to Rancherías and the final ascent to Cerro El Cristo, a second-rate level with ramps that reach 9.7% of inclination.
It was there that Gusneiver Gil, at 38, launched a sudden attack that no one could follow to cross the finish line alone, achieving his first victory this year and reaffirming the collective strength of his team.
In the fight for the general classification, Jorge Abreu demonstrated why he wears the leader's jersey. The Tachirense managed the stage coolly, crossing the finish line in fourth position.
His leadership was strengthened not only by his performance, but also by the passing away of his main rivals, Emmanuel Viloria and Franklin Chacón losing minutes to Abreu.
