Experts from the United Nations (UN) denounced the military operation carried out by the United States in Venezuela, which resulted in attacks on several cities and the kidnapping of the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, and the first lady, Cilia Flores.

“These actions represent a serious, manifest and deliberate violation of the most fundamental principles of international law, set a dangerous precedent and risk destabilizing the entire region and the world,” the experts said.

They recalled that acting heads of state enjoy immunity before foreign courts and warned that the offensive is in addition to previous coercive measures, such as the naval blockade and the hijacking of ships.

They also warned about the statements made by the President of the United States regarding the management of the country and the exploitation of Venezuelan resources, which they considered contrary to the right to self-determination. They urged member States to reject aggression and demand respect for international law.

“This unprecedented attack against Venezuela should not be seen as an isolated incident, but as part of a larger and profoundly worrying pattern of systematic disregard for peace, international law and multilateral institutions,” the experts said.
