The United Nations (UN) launched a solar energy project in Nigeria as part of efforts to promote clean energy solutions and strengthen sustainable energy use.
The facility, located at the UN House in Abuja, is designed to reduce electricity costs, reduce carbon emissions and promote wider adoption of renewable technologies, as reported by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a partner of TV BRICS.
This work is part of the launch of Phase I of the “Greening of the UN House” project. During the ceremony, the UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, highlighted that the project reflects the organization's commitment to accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
The installation includes a 400 kilowatt peak photovoltaic solar microgrid, which can be extended to 700 kilowatts, backed by 650 kilowatt-hours of storage in lithium-ion batteries to ensure energy resilience.
The system is also equipped with energy management technologies based on artificial intelligence and monitoring using the Internet of Things (IoT), allowing electricity generation and consumption to be followed in real time.
This solar infrastructure is expected to reduce electricity costs at the UN House by approximately 40%. In addition, the project will reduce grid electricity consumption by almost one million kilowatt-hours per year and will reduce carbon emissions by around 300 tons.
