The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, warned that the multilateral body is approaching an “imminent financial collapse” due to the debt of 4 billion dollars held by the United States (US), while it is unknown when and how the payments will be made.
It is known that the debt is divided as follows: 2,196 million dollars to the regular operating budget of the UN, including 767 million for this year, in addition to 1,800 million dollars to the separate budget for UN peacekeeping operations in remote areas.
The US ambassador to the organization, Mike Waltz, stated that his government planned to make a “significant payment” in the coming weeks, while Guterres warned member countries that the UN's regular operating budget could run out in July.
US President Donald Trump declared that the UN “has not reached its potential”, so his administration paid nothing in 2025 and has withdrawn from the World Health Organization and UNESCO, in addition to withdrawing funding from dozens of others.
