On December 23, the United Nations Security Council (UN) will discuss the threats made by the United States Government against Venezuela, following the request submitted by Ambassador Samuel Moncada.

The extraordinary meeting is scheduled for 3:00pm, New York time, with the participation of the five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — together with the ten non-permanent members: Algeria, Denmark, Slovenia, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Somalia.

Venezuelan diplomacy denounced that the coercive measures imposed by Washington, including the blockade and theft of oil tankers and the closure of national airspace, constitute a threat to regional peace and stability. In an official communication addressed to the President of the Security Council, Samuel Žbogar, it was warned that these actions violate the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of Venezuela.

According to an agreement published by AVN, the document also reports the kidnapping of Venezuelan ships in the month of December, in addition to the seizure of other ships in recent days. The delegation warned that these practices reproduce models of aggression that have generated global conflicts in the past, and therefore urged the Security Council to act in defense of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
