More than two million people attended the protests after the strike was called by several unions “in defense of the flotilla”, which carried a total of 40 Italians, and to “stop the genocide”, announced the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL) on its social networks.

The measure has paralyzed rail, air, metro and bus transport, health care and schools. In addition, activists have blocked several important roads, shouting “Free Palestine, stop the war machine”, according to local media reports.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced this week that Italy would recognize the Palestinian State if the Israeli detainees were released and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) were excluded from a possible Government, something that the Italian people do not agree on and demand an end to the conflict without any conditions for the Palestinians.

Israeli media have reported that 473 activists detained aboard the Flotilla ships were taken to Ketziot prison, in the Negev desert. The detainees are due to be deported to their countries early next week by air flights.

Since October 2023, the Israeli regime has unleashed a war of genocide against Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of 66,288 Palestinians, mostly women and children. Hundreds of them have died due to the famine imposed on the population through the illegal blockade.
