The second round of the presidential elections in Uruguay began this Sunday, when more than 2,700,000 citizens are called to elect the successor of right-wing president Luis Lacalle Pou, who will hand over the presidential band on March 1, 2025.
In a close contest, the left-wing leader and pupil of former president José “Pepe” Mujica, Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front (FA), remains ahead of Álvaro Delgado of the National Party.
As of 8:00am, a total of 7,225 voting centers are available, in a process in which voting is mandatory, with fines for those who do not go to the polls. The Electoral Court expects to have the official result around 22:00 hours, although if it were very tight it may not be possible to determine a winner tonight.
Orsi won 43.9% of the votes in the elections of October 27, while Delgado won 26.7%, which forced the ballot because none of the candidates exceeded 50%.
