The National Art Gallery (GAN) opened its doors for the premiere of “I am Fedra” by director Mariannela Morena, a play by the Teatro La Morena in Uruguay, as part of the 4th edition of the International Progressive Theater Festival (FITP2025).
Morena indicated that the work is a rewriting of Jean Racine's classic; for this reason, she explained that, in collaboration with actress Noelia Campos and musician Lautaro Moreno, “the team has been exploring a language of expressiveness that goes beyond the text, seeking to establish an intimate narrative and a deep bond with the public”.
In addition, she highlighted the relevance of addressing contemporary issues through the work, which includes the social pressure that women face in relation to the standards of hegemonic beauty and the ossification of their bodies. The piece invites spectators to enter Phaedra's bedroom, where grief and loneliness unfold.
He also explained that, through the visits of characters who try to understand their anguish and tragedy, the work seeks to share reflections on emotional support and human connection in difficult times.
On the other hand, Lautaro Moreno -musician on stage- was fascinated by the audience present: “Everyone played on time, which is something I notice in few countries. So, on the cumbia part, the truth is that everyone broke it. Congratulations on that!”
Likewise, the Deputy Minister of Arts, Image and Space, Mary Pemjean, expressed her gratitude for having been part of the public that enjoyed a work that “invites us to reflect, tell stories and feel from the depths of being”. On behalf of the Festival, he presented “the image that represents us: our masks that symbolize this Festival. As its slogan says: 'Let humanity be human'. It's part of what we're looking for and I know that theater will always achieve it,” he concluded.
With this emotional presentation and the praise received, “I am Fedra” not only promises to be an outstanding milestone within the festival, but also a call for reflection on the contemporary struggles faced by women in our society. The performances will continue until this Thursday at 5:00 in the afternoon at the GAN.
