With 52 votes in favor and 47 against, this Thursday, the Senate
of the United States (USA) approved starting the debate on a resolution to
prevent the Donald Trump Administration from taking further military action against
Venezuela without authorization from Congress.
At least five senators from Trump's Republican Party
joined Democrats in voting on the motion presented to bring the
resolution to the full Senate, international media reports.
The decision to move forward with the resolution on
war powers comes amid failed pleas from Republican leaders to
stop it and maintain the authority of the U.S. president over these
decisions, following the first military aggression against Caracas and other
Venezuelan states, on January 3, which led to the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro
and First Lady Cilia Flores.
