Republican congressmen presented in the House of Representatives of the United States (USA), a bill that would authorize the purchase of the Panama Canal, after the president-elect, Donald Trump, repeatedly assured that the White House could claim the shipping route, which was under Washington's control between 1914 and 1999.

The Republican representative of the state of South Dakota, Dusty Johnson, said in a statement that the president-elect “is right to consider the repurchase of the Panama Canal” due to “China's interest and presence in the canal,” said Russia Today (RT).

“The United States must project strength abroad: owning and operating the Panama Canal could be an important step towards a stronger United States and a safer world,” he added.

The project would grant the president authority to act in coordination with the Secretary of State, to “initiate and carry out negotiations with the appropriate counterparts of the Government of the Republic of Panama to reacquire the canal.”

From the date of enactment of the measure, the president has 180 days to submit a report to the U.S. Congress detailing the progress of the negotiations, potential challenges, and expected outcomes.
