USA: Pro-Gaza protests increase at universities

The pro-Palestine demonstrations began at Columbia University, in New York, United States (USA), but quickly spread to other universities in the country's main cities.

Hundreds of students have united against Israel's military operation against the Gaza Strip, and the wave of support continues to spread to several universities in the North American nation.

Faced with increased repression by police forces of protests, the U.S. government insisted on Sunday that demonstrations must be peaceful, in an attempt to change the focus of public opinion on student arrests.

“We certainly respect the right to peaceful protests,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on an ABC program.
