With the objective of deepening the technical and integral development agenda in the country, the Minister of Science and Technology, Yván Gil Pinto, held a working meeting with the representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Venezuela, Alexis Bonte, and his technical team.
Regarding the day, Minister Yván Gil Pinto highlighted: “We held a meeting with the representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Venezuela, Alexis Bonte and his valuable team, with the purpose of strengthening our cooperation in food and nutrition security, development of sustainable food systems, management of biodiversity and action against climate change.”
During the day, according to a press release, both delegations reviewed the progress of the joint work agenda between the international organization and the Bolivarian Government, a historic relationship of technical cooperation that began in 1945 and aimed at strengthening the nation's productive capacities.
As part of the meeting, the authorities gave special recognition to María Cantalicia Torres, a farmer from the Gavidia Páramo, state of Mérida, selected as one of FAO's 100 Heroines in the context of the International Year of Agriculture 2026. The Andean producer, together with her family, has dedicated her career to soil care, textile craftsmanship and the rescue of native potato varieties such as Los Yaques and Renacer.
In this regard, the holder of the scientific portfolio highlighted that: “Their work in planting potatoes is a valuable contribution to the country's food security and to the Scientific-Peasant Alliance”, a program promoted by MINCYT for the preservation of local seeds and ancestral knowledge.
Minister Yván Gil Pinto ratified the commitment of the National Executive to the productive mass of the Venezuelan countryside, highlighting the articulation between scientific knowledge and ancestral knowledge as a key axis to guarantee agri-food sovereignty.
