Venezuela congratulated the people of Haiti for the 222 years since the proclamation of their independence, January 1, 1804, after the victorious revolution of slaves and peasants against the colonizing French forces,

'In the name of President Nicolás Maduro, we send a fraternal embrace to the people of Haiti, who today continue their struggle for full liberation after decades of foreign interference,” said the Minister of People's Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, in a post on his Telegram channel.

He also recalled that Toussaint Louverture “taught us that the liberation of peoples cannot be overthrown or defeated”, because it will always flourish again; its roots are deep and numerous, and its strength lies in the dignity of its people.

“222 years ago, the people of Haiti paved the way for sovereignty and independence for our peoples. On January 1, 1804, after the victorious Revolution of slaves and peasants against the colonizing French forces, the independence of Haiti was proclaimed, which became the first independent republic led by people of African descent in America and the first nation on the continent to permanently abolish slavery,” he said.

Gil asserted that the Haitian Revolution had an admirable leader in Toussaint Louverture, whose legacy transcends centuries and continues to inspire our anti-colonial struggles.
