Venezuela presents cocoa potential at FAO technical meeting

A delegation from Venezuela is participating in the Global Technical Workshop on Special Tropical Agricultural Products, which is being held in the province of Hainan, China as part of the “One Country, One Priority Product” (OCOP) initiative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Venezuelan delegation is led by the Deputy Minister of Research and Generation of Scientific Knowledge, Carmen Virginia Liendo, who presented the country report on the development of cacao in Venezuela and addressed the strategic potential of this sector as a highly valued asset and engine of non-oil economic diversification.

In his presentation, he also added that, as part of the Scientific-Peasant Alliance, the Scientific Technological and Innovation Network for the Strengthening of Cocoa is being promoted, a network that allows the rehabilitation of germplasm banks, nurseries and clonal gardens, in addition to the distribution of elite plant material, which reaffirms the commitment of the National Government to the scientific and technological development of the cocoa sector, national press review
