The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, through an official statement, categorically rejects the recent designation imposed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the United States Government against President Gustavo Petro Urrego, his family members and other officials of the Colombian State, since these actions are illegal, illegitimate and neocolonial in nature, violating International Law and the Charter of the United Nations.
In this regard, the Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, reported through his Telegram channel the content of the statement, which states that “so-called unilateral coercive measures are mechanisms of aggression and political pressure prohibited by the multilateral system, condemned by the UN General Assembly, the Human Rights Council and special rapporteurs, for violating the sovereignty and human rights of peoples.”
He also affirms that these actions seek to “promote internal destabilization in Colombia as part of a strategy of interference that seeks to politically subdue the independent States of the region.”
Venezuela also demands “the immediate cessation of these coercive practices contrary to international law and calls on the governments and peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean to defend the sovereignty and dignity of our region against all forms of interference.”
The declaration reaffirms the position of the Venezuelan State in defense of multilateralism, international legality and non-interference in countries' internal affairs, in rejection of unilateral measures that affect political stability and the self-determination of peoples.
