Venezuelan wrestling excelled in the Spanish Grand Prix

Alexa Álvarez, Astrid Montero and Nathaly Grimán swept their rivals and won the gold medal in the Spanish Grand Prix of Olympic wrestling that culminated on Sunday in the city of Madrid.

The event served as a competitive touch for fighters who are in their preparation phase with a view to their participation in the 25th Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, which will take place from July 24 to August 8.

The first medal of the Creole cast in Spanish soil came from the hand of Alexa Álvarez, champion of the 2025 Pan American Youth Games, who with an impeccable record in four fights was at the top of the podium.

The deltana beat Argentina's Adrianny Castillo 15-2 due to technical superiority, then beat Spain's Carla Jaum 15-1, and in the semifinals she repeated the 16-3 dose against the German Andrea Grasruck. In the grand final, she beat American Taylor Whiting 14-0 to secure the gold medal. The podium was completed by Germany's Grasruck and Canada's Suanne Harms.

The Venezuelan shipment culminated in the total dominance of Nathaly Grimán, who won the gold medal in the 68 kg division after defeating Germany's Gerda Barth by immobilization in the final.

The 2026 Pan-American champion defeated Italy's Godino in her first immobilization match, then won 10-0 for technical superiority against Canadian Miki Rowbotton, and got her ticket to the final by defeating France's Koumba Fanta 6-0.

The bronze medal was shared by Colombia's Nicole Parrado and Italy's Laura Godino.

For his part, Luis Avenaño won the bronze medal in the 87 kg division in the Greco-Roman category by beating Frenchman Johnny Just Bur 9-5, a medal he shared with the Norwegian Martin Ljosaak.

The Trujillo player fell 10-0 to Norway's Exauce Mukubu in their first match, but later beat Kazakh Baurzhan Mussin 9-5 in the repechage phase, allowing him to enter the match for third place.
