At least eight people died and two were injured, this Tuesday, January 9, in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil in the midst of a day of violence in Ecuador, the mayor of the coastal city, Aquiles Álvarez, reported the Prensa Latina website.
At a press conference, he indicated that several episodes caused the loss of those lives, one of which occurred in a shopping mall.
“There are no words that can fill a gap for people who have lost a loved one today,” Álvarez said.
Overall, the city's emergency monitoring centers handled 1,932 calls and 650 emergencies, including the attack on the TC Television channel.
Among the injured is a policeman, who was shot by a firearm, the Guayaquil authorities said.
In addition, there were violent incidents in five hospitals and 29 buildings were the target of crime this Tuesday, in some state units, damage to infrastructure is reported.
Faced with this situation, several businesses in the city center closed their doors earlier than usual time and public institutions and media ordered their workers to be evacuated.
The wave of criminal acts of the last few hours includes explosives in Quito and Cuenca, riots in at least five prisons in the country, and the escape of two inmate ringleaders, Adolfo Macías (Fito) and Colón Pico.
The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, signed a decree that recognizes the existence of an internal armed conflict in the country and classifies about twenty organized crime groups as terrorists.
The head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Admiral Jaime Vela, assured that any group mentioned in the decree is a military objective.
There is currently a state of emergency in the country with a curfew from 23:00 to 05:00 (local time).
