The World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Friday that thousands of children and women may soon die of hunger in Sudan because the arrival of the dry season will make it even more difficult to access water and food.

This country, where one in seven children under five years of age is seriously malnourished and between 70 and 80 percent of health centers no longer work, is also under pressure to have more than 8.5 million displaced people.

The WHO spokesman, Christian Lindmeier, said that “with the scarcity season about to begin and without unhindered access to aid, the situation will only worsen in the coming months.”

In addition, he stressed that 3.5 million children under five suffer from acute malnutrition; “unless urgent lifesaving aid and funding meet their needs.”
