The secretariat of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America — Peoples' Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) greets with respect and admiration the heroic people and government of Nicaragua on the 169th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto

“The first great defeat of imperialism on the continent, which opened the path of dignity and sovereignty that this dear Nicaraguan people continues to travel,” wrote the Secretary General of ALBA-TCP, Rander Peña.

Through social networks, he stressed that “today our peoples, inspired by the irredeeming spirit of San Jacinto, by the courage of Andrés Castro and his immortal stone, are preparing to defend, with the same anti-imperialist impetus, their independence and the territorial integrity of our country”.

He also highlighted that Nicaragua, under the leadership of the co-presidents, Commander Daniel Ortega and his colleague Rosario Murillo, “the Nicaraguan people keep alive and undefeated the loyalty expressed in San Jacinto,” a moment that gives reason for ALBA to reiterate its deep gratitude for the permanent brotherhood and solidarity with which they accompany our people in all their battles.

The Battle of San Jacinto took place on September 14, 1856 at the homonymous farm, located 42 kilometers northeast of Managua, as part of the Nicaraguan National War.

160 members of the patriotic forces of the Northern Army (60 of whom were indigenous Yucul archers), led by Colonel José Dolores Estrada Vado, defeated 300 filibusters sent by the American William Walker, under the command of Byron Cole, who sought to take over Central America.
