Alexander Lukashenko won a landslide victory in the presidential elections held this Sunday in Belarus, winning 86.82% of the popular vote.

According to preliminary data from the Central Electoral Commission, cited by the RT agency, Lukashenko beat his rivals Sergey Syrankov (Communist Party), who obtained 3.21% of the votes; Oleg Gaidukevich (of the Liberal Democratic Party), with 2.02%; Anna Kanopatskaya (former opposition figure and member of the House of Representatives), with 1.86%, and Alexander Khizhniak (Republican Party of Labor and Justice), with 1.74%. 3.60% of the ballots were “against all”, an option that voters in this country have.

The polling stations opened at 8:00 in the morning and operated until 20:00 at night (local time) to give about 6.9 million Belarusians the opportunity to vote. The turnout in the presidential elections was 85.70% of the total number of those included in the voting lists.

In Belarus, more than 5,000 voting centers were installed, but for the first time there were none abroad. The authorities explained that the reason for this is the lack of security measures in areas that were previously used for voting on the territory of other countries, as well as a reduced diplomatic capacity.

The head of the Belarusian Interior Ministry, Ivan Kubrakov, stated that the Slavic nation had never had such quiet elections as the presidential elections of 2025. “Despite attempts to distort the situation abroad, we have never had such quiet elections and election campaigns! This is demonstrated by the numbers and, above all, by the people,” he said, adding that “the situation is under control” and “they don't expect any incidents”.

The Belarusian president has been in power since 1994 and this will be his seventh presidential term against the country, which is one of Russia's closest allies.
