On January 20, 1973, Amilcar Cabral, the top leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), was assassinated.

Cabral defended his people from Portuguese colonialism, in fact the declaration of independence by this Guinean leader announced on January 8, 1973, was what cost him his life.

An agronomist and writer by profession, he made memorable speeches of freedom, which were later edited by the party and its supporters.

“Every revolutionary movement represented here, with weapons in its hands, is capable of repeating in its country, in unison with its people, the already legendary cry of the Cuban people of Homeland or Death, we will overcome,” he said during his participation in the First Conference of the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America on January 6, 1966.

Thanks to his combative spirit, his people achieved independence on September 24, 1973, almost eight months after his assassination.

He admired the Cuban Revolution and was honored with the help offered to him by Commander Fidel Castro, which extended to the health and education sectors.

He was born on September 12, 1924 in Bafata, in the then Portuguese Guinea (BISSAU).
