The National Assembly (AN) approved by consensus the request of the Supreme Court of Justice (AN) to lift the parliamentary immunity of Deputy Julio César Torres Molina, representative of Mérida, in order to continue the judicial process against him.

The President of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, said that officials must take seriously the fight against drug trafficking and that the law will be applied without distinction, while stating that those who commit crimes from public office will face criminal consequences.

Deputy William Benavides indicated that the request responds to links between the parliamentarian and criminal networks, detected in investigations carried out by security agencies.

For his part, Pedro Carreño said that the use of office to favor external interests represents an institutional betrayal.

On the other hand, Oscar Rondero added that the opposition faction supports the measure, considering that the deputy failed to fulfill his constitutional commitment and to the voters.

It should be noted that the decision was framed within the framework of the national policy against drug trafficking and is based on the provisions of the Magna Carta and the internal regulations of the legislative body.
