The National Assembly (AN) unanimously approved the draft agreement on the occasion of the canonization of Mother Carmen Rendiles and Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, in recognition of their spiritual, ethical and social heritage, deeply rooted in the identity of the Venezuelan people.
During the regular session, Deputy Nicolás Ernesto Maduro Guerra stated that “Venezuela dresses in holiness” celebrating a historic day that transcends beliefs and borders. “The soul of the Nation was touched. Today, the Venezuelan Parliament pronounces itself with a beautiful agreement on this holiday that calls us to renew values, humility and ethics, just as did these two saints who left everything to serve the humblest,” he said.
Deputy Jesús Brito, supporting the agreement, stressed that the canonization of the two Venezuelans must be understood as an opportunity for national reconciliation. “Hopefully this will serve as a strong stimulus for all Venezuelans to come together and know how to recognize each other as children and brothers of the same homeland,” he said.
Brito recalled that Pope Leo XIV urged the Venezuelan people to come together in respect and fraternity, and warned that “it is not licit to celebrate Mother Carmen if we feel hatred for another Venezuelan.”
In this regard, he urged us to reflect on the present and the future of the country in the light of the virtues lived by both saints, such as humility, service and dedication.
“The agreement makes it clear: Mother Carmen dedicated her life to education, the care of temples and the formation of priests. José Gregorio, for his part, has always been in the hearts of Venezuelans. When someone was sick, a sticker on the bed was enough to feel relief. Today we celebrate that the one we knew was a saint, that we felt holy,” he concluded
