This Monday, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, made an urgent call this Monday for a diplomatic understanding to alleviate the humanitarian and economic crisis that the Antillean island is going through.

Faced with increased political tensions in the region and recent statements about possible external interventions, the highest representative of the United Nations (UN) stressed the need to protect the stability of the Cuban people through international cooperation mechanisms that respect sovereignty and promote peace.

“We advocate a constructive dialogue between all the parties involved as the only legitimate way to mitigate the suffering of the Cuban people and guarantee respect for their fundamental rights,” Guterres said during his speech.

The Secretary General emphasized that measures of unilateral pressure and threats of territorial control only deepen the deficiencies of citizens, removing any possibility of a practical and mutually acceptable solution.

The position of the United Nations comes after recent statements by the US government about taking control of the administration on the island, which has generated an alert in the international community about the humanitarian consequences that this would entail.

For the international organization, stability in the Caribbean depends on conflicts being managed under the framework of international law, always prioritizing assistance to the most vulnerable sectors and avoiding actions that compromise the integrity of the nation.

Guterres urged world leaders to lay down confrontational attitudes to focus on the real challenges faced by families in Cuba, reaffirming the UN's commitment to mediation.

“It is imperative that international politics be oriented towards humanitarian aid and development, allowing dialogue to overcome imposition; our organization remains ready to support any process that seeks the dignity and well-being of Cubans,” the official concluded.
