The Andean Curacas, Mburuvicha Guarani, Caciques Wichi, and other indigenous authorities in Salta in Argentina spoke out against what they described as “the crudest state indifference” and denounced the dispossession of their territories for the benefit of extractive interests.

According to information reported by Telesur, the protest comes after the approval of the new Territorial Planning of Native Forests (OTBN) in Salta, which enables clearing of more than 70,000 protected hectares.

The assembly of indigenous leaders criticized the lack of prior, free and informed consultation, as established by National Law 26,331 and ILO Convention 169, and denounced that communities are “dispossessed, evicted, forgotten to their fate, suffering deaths from malnutrition, dehydration, lack of medical care, lack of medicines, insecurity.”
