During the early morning of this Sunday, more than 160 members of the Police of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, broke into the vicinity of the residence of former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, in the neighborhood of Constitución, to evict hundreds of militants who had been in a camp for five days as a sign of support.
The operation, described by the authorities as a “liberation of public space”, left images of violence against civilians and the forced removal of tents, flags and improvised structures.
The operation was carried out without warning around 2:00 in the morning, while most of the demonstrators were asleep. Security forces removed gazebos, umbrellas and personal items, arguing the “illegality” of people's stay.
Authorities denied clashes, witnesses reported excessive use of force and a climate of intimidation. “They came as if we were committing a crime, but we were only accompanying Cristina at an unfair time.”
