In order to defend their right to wage, the Automotive Tranviarios Union (UTA) of Argentina, which brings together bus drivers, called for a 24-hour strike in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), which brings together the city of Buenos Aires and the Buenos Aires suburbs, the Telesur portal reported.

“Faced with the refusal of our proposals, the CDN of the Automotive Tram Union calls for a 24-hour stoppage of activities starting at 00:00 local time on October 31, 2024 for short and medium distances from the AMBA region,” said the union.

The decision was agreed after the hearing this Monday morning convened by the Secretary of Labor to give way to a wage negotiation that has been stalled since the end of August.

Currently, the salary of a bus driver is 1,060,000 Argentine pesos. The UTA's demand is to bring it to 1,322,000 Argentine pesos in December, which would represent an increase of 25%.

According to the platform Tiempo Argentino, “the national government let it be clear last Friday that it had increased AMBA passenger transportation subsidies by more than 18 billion pesos per month and that would be enough to pay for the increase requested by the UTA. However, Monday's negotiation failed because the business chambers 'did not bring any new proposals'”.

The UTA insisted that “this union has been patient and has tolerated the negotiations compulsorily ordered by the State with the intention of solving the causes that led us to this situation, but it has only served to postpone the measures of force that we had already announced.”
