Argentine press workers, backed by human rights organizations, reported to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) a pattern of harassment, threats and stigmatization by the Government of Javier Milei against the media and their members.
Francisco Rabini, assistant secretary of the Buenos Aires Press Union (SIPREBA), confirmed the unity of the sector in the face of Milei's policies that seek to silence freedom of expression.
During the session, the commissioners presented their complaints to the state representation, headed by the Secretary of Human Rights, Alberto Baños. The government delegation rejected the complaints, challenged the procedures and maintained a conflicting position with respect to the authorities of the regional body.
The Argentine Journalism Forum (FOPEA), Amnesty International, Citizen Power and the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) reported the existence of hate campaigns and the deterioration of guarantees for the exercise of the profession.
The Freedom of Expression Observatory documented 257 incidents against journalists throughout the year, a figure that exceeds the 2013 record. Records indicate 179 attacks in 2024, reflecting an increase of 53% compared to the previous cycle and an increase of 103% compared to 2022.
