In the Gaza Strip, the Government Information Office revealed that in recent days more than 10,000 tents housing refugees were damaged by climate change and rising sea waves.
Through the regional press, images were revealed of numerous tents destroyed or floating above the sea off the coast of the territory, where more than two million Palestinians live, details Prensa Latina.
As a result of Israeli attacks, most of that number is crammed into just a few tens of square kilometers in the southern Strip in thousands of tents, without drinking water systems, infrastructure, electricity and other essential services.
“We have 543 refugee centers in Gaza as a result of the war, it is a crime against humanity to force citizens to forcibly leave their homes and safe residential neighborhoods,” the Office said.
135,000 tents must be replaced urgently after months of wear and tear due to the sun's heat and changing weather conditions, in addition to the effects of the sea.
The entity highlighted that the Strip is suffering a deep crisis and warned that its inhabitants are on the verge of “a real humanitarian catastrophe due to the arrival of winter”.
We hold Israel and the United States (USA) fully responsible for these catastrophic conditions that our people are experiencing, he stressed.
Precisely, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees said yesterday that the arrival of cold weather further complicates the crisis.
“The displaced are facing tragic conditions due to heavy rains, strong winds and high sea waves, with a serious and continuing shortage of humanitarian aid,” warned Inas Hamdan, a spokeswoman for that organization.
The crisis is not limited only to housing, but also extends to the health aspect, due to a serious shortage of medical supplies, he said.
