In order to reduce traffic accidents in the state of La Guaira, especially those involving motorcycles, the governor of the state, José Alejandro Terán, announced a series of decisive measures to curb this problem affecting citizens and the public health system.

Speaking to the media, Terán highlighted that more than 80% of cases treated in emergencies are related to motorcycle accidents, mainly affecting young people between 17 and 40 years old. Among the most common injuries are fractures of the tibia, femur, fibula and pelvis, which has led to a collapse in hospital capacity.

“We have issued precise instructions to the public security forces to ensure road safety and compliance with traffic regulations. It cannot be that motorized vehicles circulate without helmets, in the opposite direction, with more than two people or with children on board,” he emphasized.

He also reported that the Law on Citizen Coexistence has been amended, increasing penalties for those who violate traffic regulations. “We are going to apply more severe fines and in serious cases, violators will face strong legal consequences. I have already signed the execution of the law,” he warned.

The impact on the health system has been significant, since the care of these cases represents a daily expense ranging from 150 to 2,000 dollars per patient, reaching a total of up to 9,000 dollars in surgical procedures and hospitalization.

“We have collapsed hospitals of people waiting to be operated on for traumatology. We have made a significant investment in equipment to solve those complex cases that come to us, but in addition, we treat cases of injured people who deserve osteosynthesis material in the order of 6,000 dollars,” he said.

Terán called for citizen awareness and co-responsibility in respect of traffic regulations. “We are committed to the safety of Guaireños, but we need everyone's collaboration. Life must be the priority,” he stressed.

The La Guaira Police maintains the deployment of the Zero Tolerance Device on the state's main roads and are promoting an awareness campaign to reduce accidents and promote a culture of respect on the roads.
