On December 10, 1859, under the command of General Ezequiel Zamora, the Battle of Santa Inés was fought , which represented one of the most important military actions of the Federal War.

In November 1859, Zamora and his men (the federals) headed to the state of Barinas, after the persecution of General Pedro Ramos, who led the Government Army of the West.

With the strategy known as retarding action, the Federals retreated to the banks of the Santo Domingo River, in Santa Inés. There they gathered forces, and by December 9 they were organized into three lines of combat.

Zamora, as a great strategist, managed to attract the attacker to an area known to his troops and then ambush them later in Santa Inés, defeating the enemy side.

In 2004, 145 years after the Battle of Santa Inés, the right wing intended to end the Bolivarian Revolution through a recall referendum, however Commander Hugo Chávez took up the challenge, naming it the Santa Agnes Campaign.

“It's so similar to the situation we're living in to me. Of course, not in military war, fortunately, but in political war. I am so much like the Santa Agnes campaign, so much so, that today I announce to Venezuelans that I am becoming the commander of the Santa Agnes campaign. Starting today until the day of the recall referendum, the Santa Agnes campaign,” said Commander Chávez.
