The Bolivian Ministry of Health confirmed the death of at least 15 people and 28 injured in the accident that occurred at the El Alto International Airport, in the west of the Andean country.
The Hercules plane (C-130), carrying money from the Central Bank of Bolivia, tried to land on the runway, but it got out and dragged vehicles as it advanced almost a kilometer.
The Bolivian ministry specified that patients are divided into different hospitals in the city, with Hospital del Norte treating the most serious cases.
Of the crew members, it was confirmed that six survived and two are still missing. “The authorities activated emergency and safety protocols, and initiated the corresponding investigation to establish the causes of the accident,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
At the scene of the accident, the tickets carried by the plane were scattered, creating a complex moment where the authorities had to intervene to prevent them from coming to take the money.
For its part, the Central Bank of Bolivia issued statements explaining the origin of the money carried by the Hercules and urging the population to return the notes to the bank or to any financial institution. “It is clearly established that the banknotes in the accident have no legal value and their possession or use is considered a crime,” the bank said in a statement.
