Under the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20), Brazil will try to influence discussions in world trade to prevent the existence of so-called “green protectionism”, with the launch of a series of rules for all countries in this mechanism.
“The sustainability agenda is a priority for the Brazilian government, but many countries actually use it to promote their protectionist interests,” said the Brazilian Secretary of Foreign Trade, Tatiana Prazeres, in an interview published this Wednesday by the newspaper “O Estado de Sao Paulo”.
Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, holds the rotating presidency of the G20 and is preparing a work agenda for the private sector, ministers and the heads of state and government of the group who will participate in the summit to be held in Rio de Janeiro in November.
Prazeres stated the objective of the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is “to make feasible an understanding on parameters and measures affecting trade, this is the most ambitious agenda”.
The Secretary of Foreign Trade reported that Brazil will propose that the rules for more sustainable trade “be transparent, involve consultation with the private sector, are no more restrictive than necessary for the objective they intend to achieve and are based on science.”
The green protectionism that is currently being applied, he explained, “has no scientific basis” and it is important to reverse it to prevent countries from being discriminated against without justification.
