Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila landed at São Paulo-Guarulhos airport on Monday, May 11, 2026, after being deported by the Israeli regime. Avila was detained for eleven days after participating in the second Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and challenge the Israeli blockade.

Upon his arrival, Ávila reported having suffered several violations of his rights during his arrest, sharing the experience with the Spanish activist Saif Abu Keshek. The activist described the Israeli authorities as “war criminals” and assured that Palestinian prisoners in adjoining cells received significantly worse treatment.

The Government of Brazil, headed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, condemned the arrest, calling it “unjustifiable” and a “serious affront to international law”. This situation is in addition to previous diplomatic tensions, in which the Brazilian president has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.

Despite being deported and facing previous arrests in 2025, Avila reaffirmed his commitment to the Palestinian cause. The activist warned that he will participate in future missions, mentioning that more than 50 boats are currently preparing in Türkiye to sail to the Palestinian enclave.
