Brazilian police captured soldiers involved in the assassination plan against Lula

This Tuesday, the Brazilian Federal Police (PF) captured four retired soldiers and an officer of the police institution, involved in an assassination plan against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva between November and December 2022.

The arrests are the result of an investigation into the Army's “black children” plan, who used technical-military knowledge to plan and coordinate illegal actions and the assassination of the South American leader, Brazilian media report.

Through the magnicidal operation, they also intended to assassinate Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Alexandre de Moraes, minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), after the defeat of former President Jair Bolsonaro in the 2022 elections.

One of those investigated is retired general Mário Fernandes, who served as executive secretary, the second most important position of the General Secretariat of the Presidency in the Bolsonaro government.

Five preventive detention orders, three search and seizure orders and 15 measures were also issued, such as the prohibition of contact between those under investigation, as well as the delivery of passports within 24 hours and the suspension of the exercise of public functions.
