The Upper House made official the creation of the Federal Indigenous University of Brazil (UNIND), a pioneering institution designed to guarantee access to higher education for native peoples. This project seeks to settle a historic debt through academic training adapted to the realities of the communities of the South American giant. The approval marks a milestone in educational policy by decentralizing professional knowledge and promoting social inclusion.
The academic activities of UNIND are scheduled to begin in the year 2027, functioning as an entity with full administrative autonomy. As announced by the Congress, the university will have the power to develop its own selection processes, always respecting cultural peculiarities. This independence will allow the institution to adjust its offer and methods of entry to the specific needs of its students and their environments.
The rapporteur of the proposal, Eduardo Braga, stressed that the university comes to combat school dropout caused by prejudice and large geographical distances. The UNIND aims to be a space for integration that eliminates the barriers that have traditionally excluded indigenous people from the national university system. The main focus will be to prevent the talent of these populations from being lost due to lack of adequate infrastructure and institutional support.
Socio-environmental sustainability and the preservation of mother tongues will be the fundamental pillars that will guide the pedagogical model of this new house of studies. These values will be integrated with high standards of academic excellence to train professionals who contribute to the development of their regions. With this step, the country is committed to an educational system that values cultural diversity and protects the linguistic heritage of its ancestral peoples.
